Birds of a Feather

Have you ever noticed that certain people seem to always be attracted together?

As the saying goes, “Birds of a feather flock together.” Well I have found this to be true when it comes to the groups of kids at school.

The popular kids always hang out together, the smokers always stick together and the negatives “thrive” together. Well, you may be asking yourself, what has this got to do with anything? Well, the way I see it, if you want to succeed in life, you need to do what successful people do.

I have the most awesome parents and they have taught me that I need to model what successful people do if I want to become one. I need to ignore the negative kids that tell me I can’t do this and I can’t do that and just go out and do it anyway.

I have also learned that it is NOT up to my government or school to create my success, its only up to me. If you want something you can’t wait for your government or school to do it for you, you must get up and do it yourslef.

That brings me to a story about pocket money. Now I know I am no expert when it comes to money but what I have learned is that, like everything else, it is up to me.

We get an allowance every month and very often I used to run out of money so I would go to my parents and ask them for more. Usually I got the answer “Meg, go and make your own money if you want more.”

Even though I hated the idea at the time, it has taught me that if I want money I can earn it myself. I was 10 at the time and this forced me to come up with some money making ideas.

My parents have some cottages on our property that they own and rent out to tenants, some of them stay for a while and some are only there for a few weeks. Well, I decided to open a massage business for the tenants. I grabbed one of the pool loungers, some blankets and pillows, some massage oil of my mom’s and I made a massage room in one of the vacant cottages. Once it was set up I had to market, so off I went to my parents office to make some signs.

Although it was far from perfect the tenants loved my idea. I wasn’t that good at massages but it helped me to make some extra pocket money.

I learnt so much from this experience, including advertising, marketing and selling. I have since learnt that there are ways to leverage yourself and make money way easier than massaging, but I would never have appreciated easier ways o making money if I hadn’t first battled a bit and done some seriously physical work.

I also would never have learned the easier ways if I hadn’t modeled already successful people and copied what they were doing. Someone has always done it before, but you can make it unique to you, put your touches on it and make it work for you. And that is how I realized that I need to stand on a stage and talk to many people at once about things that help them realize their true potential.
